Soil is an often overlooked, but absolutely essential, natural resource that forms the foundation of terrestrial ecosystems. The presentation “The Importance of Soil Design in Building a Greener City” educated architects and designers about the value of soils as a critical component of sustainable design . The design of custom graphics and a clear presentation structure allowed complex information to be delivered in an engaging way, and made the seemingly mysterious and technical subject of soils accessible within the larger design community. This presentation earned a 2022 Texas ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architecture) Award for Communication, and was also adapted to the article “The Big Deal with Dirt” published by Texas Architect.
